Hello everyone,

2020 brought us the pandemic and international turmoil. 2021 brought us... well, it certainly hasn't brought much relief. I know many of us are still struggling and reeling from the different issues over the last 16 months. In some cases, life is returning to normal, and in other cases, there's still a long way to go.

It is no secret that gameplay here as struggled as a result. I am loving the different posts and sideplots that we have going on on the game. I also want to point out that we've been working on this mission since January 2021, and we are nowhere closer to our objectives than we were when we started. This is for many reasons. Throughout the course of this mission, we've had some misunderstandings as to what certain plot points where, and we've also had people "ghost" the sim.

Because of situations like these, I feel it's necessary to issue some reminders.

1. Activity. Per simulation rules, all players are expected to respond to tags within 72 hours. Players are also expected to publish a post once every two weeks. Currently, neither of these are happening very well.

Out of 16 players, only 4 are current with the posting requirements, with 4 others just a hair past that 2-week mark.

Out of 16 players, only 7-8 are meeting current tagging requirements.

Many of you know that I'm lenient, and many of you are taking advantage of that. If you are going to go on a vacation for a week, please communicate to me. This is an act of courtesy so that the other players you are actively writing with can be notified of a coming pause. This also will allow Walsh and I to make plans, if necessary, to work around the situation, especially if your LOA will be longer than that.

2. Communicate. This is going to sound redundant, but if something happens, please communicate. There are 16 players, and while we are all here to have fun, we can only have fun when the game is moving.

To demonstrate my desire for communication, I'll warn you all now. Many of you who are in our Discord server know I'm in the process of relocating, and that won't be settled until mid-July. I'm doing my best to continue being present and keeping things moving in spite of that because I've made a commitment to you all to keep this game moving.

3. Planning. I've been thinking about this for a while, but I would like to get more people involved with planning missions. I'm thrilled that so many of you want to write on the Black Hawk, and that so many of you are here because you enjoy writing with each other (and me). But over the years, I've kept many of the cards close to my chest, and that of my XO. I want to start expanding this circle in the out-of-character realms, especially since I feel it will give you all a more personal interest in the stories that we tell and bring some more creativity to the process.

4. The Future. The Black Hawk has been around for 8 wonderful years, and I'd like to see her continue to thrive. But it's only going to do that as long as its fun and we continue to tell great stories.

Here's what needs to happen.

Walsh I need to hear from everyone by the end of day, Friday, June 4th via PM. Please tell us:

1. You CAN or CAN'T meet the tagging and posting requirements. If you can make them, great. If you can't make them, I don't want you to think that's going to mean dismissal from the sim. I'm not looking to remove anyone through this, but I want to keep stories moving. If you can't meet requirements, we will discuss alternatives, and that may mean senior officers may have to forfeit their department head positions.

2. Tell us if you want to be more involved in planning missions and stories for the Black Hawk. I will be transparent and say that if you want to do this, you will be required to be active on Discord because that is where our discussions will take place. If you can't be on Discord, then it won't be possible for you to take an active role in this. There will also not be any in-character promotions or bonuses for being involved in this.

3. If there is something you're struggling with on the sim, whether it's a difficulty writing and interacting with the stories here, or just a general suggestion, please share it. Only Walsh and I will see these notes, and we will not share this with anyone. We only want to help you, and the game, succeed in the best ways possible, and we can only do that if we can find ways to remove the roadblocks.

If we don't hear from you by Friday (unless you are on a previously arranged LOA), then Walsh and I will have to make some hard decisions in order to keep the game going in a way that works best for those who are committed to remaining active.

I know for many of you, there isn't anything to worry about, especially since you're actively working on stories. In the meantime, get your PMs in, and please let's get some of the next phases of the mission going. If there's anything I can do to help, even if that's playing an NPC in your JP to help keep things moving, I'll be happy to do that.

Thank you all for your patience and your fantastic writing. I look forward to continued success and fun with all of you.

Major Milestone! Category - General News

Hello everyone!

I was checking a few things out on the backend, and I made a discovery! It turns out, the post "Late Physical" was this sim's 1,500th post! Our posts are tracked by item published, not the writers involved in them, which makes this feat even more incredible.

1,500 posts in less than 8 years. This truly is incredible! There is a lot more fantastic writing going on behind the scenes, and I am loving how this mission is starting to come alive.

Thank you all for over 1,500 fantastic posts, and here's to 1,500 more!

Maintenance Complete Category - Website Update

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the USS Black Hawk!

Thank you for your patience as we performed some not needed, but very nice under-the-hood changes. Let's take a look at some of our cool toys...

First, Mission Posts now have a Summary feature. You can add a summary to any post you write that can quickly describe the actions taken within the post. This can be really helpful for some of our really long epics to summarize the actions we've taken. Feel free to add this to any of the current posts in progress!

Second, it's high time we standardized time. Some of you may be familiar with this feature already, but this one has some added perks. While I currently have it selected for "Day and Time", I can change it to either Stardate, or I can change it to Date and Time (where you can actually enter a calendar date). I have it defaulted to Day and Time for now, but we can always change it later. I've already updated ALL Extinction Mission posts with this new system.

Third, we have a new Wiki Parser! This means you can now add [wiki|Main_Page|wiki links] with absolute ease to your posts if you want. All you have to do is get the name of your wiki article, such as "Probes" and follow this format (remove all of the spaces)

[ wiki | Probes ]

I'll place an example in the OOC Chat for reference with other particulars.

Fourth, I made some slight styling changes on the admin panel, and I'm working on adding support for bulleted lists.

But, as mentioned earlier, we're back up and running. Enjoy!

January Update Category - Sim Announcement

Hello everyone!

Welcome to 2021! (I say this only because this is my first actual news update since November last year.) There are a couple things I need to share with everyone.

1. Awards
This is something I've been terrible at dealing with in the last couple of years. Walsh and I are currently working on updating these site-wide, especially our length-of-service and mission completion awards. But there are a couple things we need from you.

First, we need your nominations! From now until January 31st, please submit your fellow players for any of the crew awards that we have available. To do this, go to Control Panel > User Subpanel > Award Nominations.

Second, if you have an idea for a new award, reach out to Walsh or myself and we'll take a look at it.

2. Posting Requirements
Per our rules, all players are required to publish a post every two weeks, and respond to any tags within 72 hours. In 2020, this was relaxed quite a bit, but we are now moving back into more solid requirements. Beginning today, these requirements are back in force.

If you cannot meet these requirements, please contact myself or Walsh immediately so that we can evaluate possible options, including alternate arrangements.

These requirements exist not because we're trying to maintain certain numbers. Many of us are here because we want to play and write excellent stories. We often get discouraged because someone takes too long to tag, and those actions can drag the stories down and sometimes even force us to take unnatural left turns in developing those stories. The command team has more than a dozen stories we'd like to go through, but that list is only going to grow the more we stall.

If you're having trouble writing, please consider visiting our wiki to review the 50 Mission Post ideas, or even consider creating an NPC in another department.

3. Let's Have Fun
I know I had to go for the hard stuff there, but let's definitely remember that this is a game. When we all work together, fun and creativity are allowed to flourish. Let's enjoy each other, our collaboration, and tell some amazing stories!

Anniversary & Current Status Category - Mission Update

On December 7, 2020, the Black Hawk will turn the wonderful age of 7! This achievement is fantastic only for the dedication and commitment you all have shared for this fine game.

2020 has been a challenging year for us all, and the Black Hawk is no exception. We may be a far cry from our usual writing output, but I'm happy to say that our quality has not suffered. I do want to take a couple minutes and provide an update.

First, concerning our current mission, Ghosts, the final 2 JPs are in progress, and both are focusing on the troublesome HASA. This matter will be resolved in December so we can close this mission before the new year.

Second, we will undergo a short period of repair at Gamma Command, which is orbiting New Bajor in the Gamma Quadrant. I will be getting information for this online on the wiki very very soon. As such, I am opening Mission 20.5 "Interlude" right now on the site. Between now and January 1st, feel free to write for your character(s) enjoying the landscape provided by Gamma Command and/or New Bajor. We won't be here long, maybe a couple weeks in-character, but it'll be enough for your character to stretch legs and de-stress.

Third, we will be launching our next mission, Extinction, promptly on January 1, 2021. This way, we can kick off the new year fresh and ready to go.

Thank you all again for your stalwart dedication. It's because of you that the Black Hawk has endured through the best and worst of times!

Hello everyone,

As a reminder, we are in the middle of a migration. The wiki (database) has already been moved. Our main site will be moved this weekend, likely on a Saturday morning. I will provide notice on Discord when I do, and the site will be locked in the interim.

The site will be backed up today. Please do not upload anything further to the site. You are free to continue tagging until the site is locked as the database is independent of the site. I'll keep you all posted on Discord once the journey begins.

Upcoming Migration Category - Website Update

When I started up the Black Hawk about 6 years ago, I could not have imagined the wondrous journey that would follow. Not only have we been through 20 missions together and two fleets, we have gone from extraordinary situations from a hosting standpoint as well.

We started with free, as do most. Then, when we implemented mediawiki, I had to start paying to cover the utilized bandwidth. It started as an account upgrade, and then to a full-blown domain.

What I did not anticipate at the time was that my simming "career" would take on other interests as well. I've managed a TOS Movie Era sim (USS Delphinus) and now a DSC/TOS alternate universe era sim (USS Lexington) all while starting to entertain the idea of a Starbase sim set aboard Gamma Command with Admiral O'Connell in the Gamma Quadrant.

To avoid large hosting bills each month, I've kept my resources consolidated with the Black Hawk. My wallet enjoys this, but my vanity doesn't. It's a bit unfair to the Lexington to have as its domain. Therefore, I have begun some changes to the infrastructure.

The first step was to purchase a new domain, which is Anura is the "order" for amphibians, specially frogs. Kinda fitting for a guy whose avatar is Kermit.

The next step will be to migrate all of my sims, including the Black Hawk, over to this domain. The downside to this is that we will no longer be using I will set up redirects when the time comes and we'll have a period of time when the site won't be accessible while the transition is underway.

I do not have a time scheduled for this transition, but I will be doing it during the month of September. I will provide ample notice when when the site will be down. Once complete, all you'll notice is that we just have a new web address. Everything else will play out as normal.

Thank you for your patience during this transition, and most importantly, thank you so much for all of your wonderful support. The Black Hawk is an incredible place thanks to players like you!

We Won! Category - Sim Announcement

Hello, everyone!

Thank you all for being patient with me during my Discord break. I wanted to make sure that all of you, especially the ones that haven't heard, were aware of the Tournament of Simulations. We first entered for the 2017 calendar year, and placed among a dozen other entrants, taking home what was essentially a "Third Place" level.

We entered again for the 2018 calendar year, but did not place.

We entered a third time for the 2019 calendar year, using our "Truth and Justice" mission, starting with the away team being infected with the Dolmoqour parasites. Judging took a bit longer this year due to COVID, but the results were finally announced on the 4th of July.

The Black Hawk didn't just place. We received an "Outstanding Star Trek" award, and the top overall score! Congratulations to all of you who were involved in this mission, and helped us win this prestigious honor.

I also want to give a shout out to our fellow 22nd Fleet sims Starbase 400, Charon's Opus, LAFD, and Memory Theta for also placing in this year's tournament.

Sim Update Category - General News

Hello everyone,

The month of May is officially (well, almost officially) behind us. Summer is almost here, restrictions are slowly lifting nationwide, and there's some sense of normalcy that is returning. COVID really messed with us all, each of us in different ways. Among its victories is our current mission. It was meant to be so much more than it currently is, and I thank each and every one of you for helping us push through. We're wrapping things up now, and our next mission will be starting soon.

In addition to all of this, we need to talk about Tagging Requirements.

When this craziness began, we suspended all tagging requirements while we all dealt with our lives. Now that that is ending, it's time to restore these requirements.

All Tagging Requirements will be reinstated on Monday, June 1, 2020.

This means that all tags must be answered within 72 hours and that you will need to have one published post every two weeks.

Full details can be found here:

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to myself or Walsh on Discord. Thanks!

Oh, also! With a mission ending... time to nominate for awards! Don't forget about those!

Recent Events Category - Out of Character

Hi everyone,

As I'm sure many of you are painfully aware, unprecedented events are taking place all over the world. As each of us lead different lives, each of us are impacted by these events in very different ways. Because of everything going on, I am suspending tagging requirements for this sim until further notice. If you are able to participate in the game, great. Please do, as I know some of us are stuck at home and need the distraction. For those of us not stuck at home, I'm sure our professional lives are intensifying with extra tasks and duties in order to fall in line with what is going on.

I'm asking for everyone to be patient with and to understand each other. This storm shall soon pass, and the time to rebuild normalcy will follow.

As always, if you have a question or concern, please hit me up on Discord.

Happy simming, everyone.]]>

Staffing Changes Category - Sim Announcement

Hello everyone,

This has been an eventful week. Due to recent departures, the command team has been working pretty hard on figuring out our next steps and how to move forward. Turnover on Star Trek sims is nothing new. We've all been there. It happens both between and during missions. This particular instance was difficult since these departures could not just be whisked away and ignored. So, a couple things are going to happen.

First, I have been given permission by both players to write them our of our story. I will be dealing with this in an upcoming post.

Second, we have had to determine how to move forward with our medical staff, and whether or not we would look internally or externally. After discussing with the writers behind the two PCs in the medical department, we have decided to move forward by placing Lieutenant Jennin Rhula (Teix) into the Chief Medical Officer position. The "nitty gritty" details are still being worked out, and this will be handled In Character very soon.

In the meantime, gameplay will continue. Those of you who still need medical checkups can see Doctor Milo or Doctor Rhula, however it works out for you. If you have any questions, please be sure to let us know.

Thanks, and happy simming!

Command Team Statement on Recent Departures Category - Out of Character

Hello everyone,

As you may have learned by now, the player behind SCPO Rylan and MCPO Mazen has decided to leave the Black Hawk sim. In addition to this departure, I also must regretfully announce that our Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Jayla Kij, has decided to leave as well. Both departures were sudden and unexpected.

Rylan’s departure stems from a few unfortunate misunderstandings he has had with both myself and a couple other players in this game. I know I don’t always see eye to eye with everyone on this sim, but I always try to do my best to keep the peace and to keep the game enjoyable for all. I regret to say that I was unable to keep things amicable for all parties in recent weeks. Everything came to a head last night in a JP between Rylan and another player. A misunderstanding was created and Rylan elected to voluntarily depart due to the established pattern.

Jayla’s departure came soon thereafter. While she is an excellent player, she and Rylan had their characters in a relationship in-character. This sudden departure put Jayla in a precarious position, and she elected to leave the sim instead of forcing an unfortunate situation on her character(s). We certainly understand and respect this decision, no matter how unfortunate this situation is.

Since events have been unfolding over the last twelve hours, Walsh and I have been reviewing the entire situation at hand, sharing what we know, and analyzing it. We have come to the conclusion that while this entire situation was unfortunate, it has also been building for some time with little chance to diffuse it further.

Moving forward, we are aware of some situations that we are now in. Obviously, we are without a Chief Medical Officer. We have not made a decision on how we would like to fill the position, though there are some options in front of us, including promoting someone from within this group, or placing some ads and going from there. Some of you have had JPs going with Jayla, and those are now unfortunately moot. I would ask, however, that you keep those JPs for a little bit longer and we can advise you soon on what to do with them.

If you have any questions about any of this, please see myself or Walsh privately. We are definitely stunned and saddened that this has happened. No matter what, we hope that we can work through this situation together.
