Personality & Traits

General Overview Carrying a mix of two worlds, Mak grew up under the rigid discipline of a Cardassian Gul. Even for a short time, he grew up in a military structure on a Cardassian station, yet remained fiercely resilient. Seeing other Bajorans on Xenok Nor made him question why his father, Gul Olmec, denied his Bajoran heritage and instead enforced Cardassian culture in its place.

Growing up under Olmec for a total of nine years shaped Mak’s unique worldview into the opposite of what his father tried to imprint. After his death, when the Cardassians withdrew from the station in 2369, Mak became reliant on himself. He developed a charming, quick-witted, and strategic mind, along with a rebellious attitude. He lived his solitary life being sarcastic, guarded, and self-reliant while surviving on Xenok Nor. Beneath his hardened exterior, however, is a deeply spiritual, passionate, and loyal soldier who commits himself to any tasks or causes he believes in. His moral code is rigid but unique to his own, forged from trauma, cultural clashes, and his search for his sense of belonging. While keeping others at arm’s length, he eventually accepts people into his circle and fiercely defends them while committed to his adapted ideals.

Personal History When his father, Aerie Pokka, fought in the resistance cell on Bajor, the Cardassians captured his group including his wife, Aerie Thera. To punish him for fighting, they took her away from Bajor to a Nor ore processing station in the badlands. Aerie Thera, pregnant at that time, fought against her captors. She resisted the guards, showing her defiance despite her physical strain of the travel from Bajor to an ore processing refinery. However, upon arriving to Xenok Nor, the Cardassians placed her under a medical quarantine. When they discovered her pregnancy, their commanding officer, Gul Olmec, took interest.

When Aerie Mak was born, Olmec quietly took the child from Thera and released her back into the general population of Xenok Nor. Keeping his name while stripping him of his Bajoran identity, Olmec assigned a caretaker to nurse Mak until he became old enough to be trained in the Cardassian military hierarchy. Meanwhile, his mother, Thera, was killed during the prisoner revolt while attempting to retake her son.

When he turned 3, Olmec began instructing him, influencing Cardassian ideals to him. Impressionable in a young age, Mak learned quickly, harshly by his adopted father. When asked about his other lineage, Olmec punished him. He attempted to guide him only to know Cardassian, which became his first spoken language. When he turned six, he discovered a locked room which Olmec forbade him to question until he became of age. However, by the end of the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor in 2369, the Cardassians withdrew.

Gul Olmec resisted at first, insisting that he keep the station, Xenok Nor. During the revolt, his guards turned on him, killing him as they abandoned the station. Since Mak was Gul Olmec’s secret experiment, no one knew of his existence. Even his caretaker abandoned him, escaping with the other Cardassians. Mak was left alone for several years on Xenok Nor. He returned to that same forbidden room, but could never unlock it for some reason. However, despite being used to being alone, he would soon receive unexpected visitors. The Maquis.

The Maquis raided the abandoned station and moved in. When they discovered its lonely inhabitant, Mak, they attempted to communicate. However, Mak clung to his own learned Cardassian ideals and speech, which made his new visitors more curious. At first, Mak felt threatened. However, as the days went by, he felt a certain kinship with them. He hung out with them, learned their tactics.

Mak turned fourteen. The group moved on from the station, leaving him to fend for himself. Mak chose to remain independent, so the Maquis left behind one of the ships for him to use. Then, they never returned as the Dominion destroyed the remnants of any Maquis resistance cells. Alone in the middle of the Badlands and left abandoned, Mak returned to that same forbidden room. Touching the scanner, it unlocked for him as if it recognized him as being older.

The door opened, revealing the late Gul Olmec’s treasure trove, including stolen Bajoran artifacts, scrolls, statues, forbidden ancient texts and fragments relating to the pah wraiths, ornamental jewelry and ritual items in Bajoran script, forbidden pah wraith relics, and other Cardassian contraband. His biometric signature activated the scanner when it recognized him being of age to learn more about his adopted father’s legacy.

However, Gul Olmec’s imprint failed when he prematurely died when the Cardassian retreated from the station. Mak, being independent, was lost. He began to lean more towards the pah wraith lore and tried to incorporate it as his new identity. For the next five years, he entered a young but short pah wraiths phase, but grew out of it. Then, he gets some visions and dreams which asks him to come to Bajor. It was 2380 when he arrived on Bajor, in Rakantha province.

It was there, he met an old man who stated he was waiting for someone. Identifying himself as Aerie Bhan, he asked Mak certain questions. As he recognized something within him that he felt resonated with him, he determined that Mak was his long-lost grandson. Bhan gave Mak what he lost during the occupation, his family legacy and Bajoran Earrings that belonged to his late father. Bhan revealed that Aerie Pokka, Mak’s father, remarried three years later to the Shan family. When Pokka died during the occupation, Bhan was left to carry on the Aerie family.

He asked Mak to accompany him through the Bajoran Wormhole to find more of his family, the Shan, on New Bajor. Mak wanted to know more, so he walked a new path with him and found himself across the quadrant to a new colony with a blend of both Starfleet and Bajor. It was on New Bajor that Aerie Mak found a new purpose in Starfleet as a recruiter told him about a training ground for new Starfleet recruits. For two years, Mak learned more about Starfleet and eventually went to Earth to begin his new Starfleet training for four years. It was 2386 when he graduated to become an ops cadet.

The USS Demeter was his first posting for the next five years until the USS Black Hawk B.
