Droning On

503 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Epilogue
Location: Security
Timeline: June 15, 2389

It had taken quite a bit of research and lots of modifications courtesy of Operations and Engineering, but Camila was satisfied with the results. She had found archives of Unmanned Remote Control Drones that people used to use for racing and photography and with the extreme loss of life on the ship in the past several missions, she knew that they were exactly what she needed. With a twenty-fourth century touch, of course.

She had selected three types of drones, a small, a medium and a large; each was small enough to fit in small places and to evade casual observation, but each was packed with an array of weapons, sensors, and transporter chips as well as cameras. As each drone increased in size, so did its capabilities and she had put in everything that could be put in.

The Chief of Security sat back and looked at the three prototypes on her desk and the controls on the console in front of her, as well as a list of personnel that she had selected for pilot training. For the most part, it would be holodeck training and learn as they went, but Starfleet had a wide variety of skilled personnel in every area and she was confident that she had made excellent choices.

Type I Drone. Armed with 6 transporter chips, camera and a limited function tricorder able to read life signs. The chips, when they hit a target, it automatically transports them to the brig.

Type II Drone. Armed with a Type I phaser, six transporter chips, camera and limited function tricorder able to read life signs. Used in turbolift shafts and larger Jeffries Tubes.

Type III Drone. Armed with Type II Phaser with a dozen shots, two transporter chip firing mechanisms with six chips each, camera, a limited function tricorder to detect life signs and LRAD sound system. Primarily used in corridors.

Each drone is remotely controlled by an operator. If control is seized by any other means, the drones becomes inactive.

Camila had ran simulation after simulation with them against various types of invaders in the holodeck, and hoped that they'd be just as effective as real time boarders when that happened again. If one drone fell, another would be there to takes its place in short order and she planned on replicating at least a hundred of each kind with the Captain's permission. Loading the holodeck recording onto a isolinear chip and the rest of the data for the drones on a PADD, she then headed out of the office to pass both to her Yeoman and had her personally deliver it to the Captain's Yeoman.

With that done, the hollowed out Security Chief headed back to her desk to to begin re-writing the Security protocols he had asked for. It was going to be another long day.
