Bring the Rain - Medical

Posted on 01 Aug 2016 @ 3:48am by Ensign Katniss Sutherland & Lieutenant Lucas Abrams M.D. & Lieutenant JG Daniella Blake

727 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Risky Business
Location: Sick Bay
Timeline: MD 6 : 1100

Sick Bay was relatively quiet. The wounded had been taken care of and most of them sent on their way. Those who were injured enough to warrant it were on biobeds under observation. Luckily, there weren't many they were keeping. Unfortunately, Doctor Kij was one that they were observing.

The concussion wasn't severe, but it wasn't mild, either. According to Doctor Abrams, there didn't seem to be any memory loss, which was a good sign, but she had been sleeping since Doctor Road had finished patching her up, only waking up once. They were keeping an eye on her brain wave patterns. The computer would alert them to any change indicating that she may be slipping too close for a coma.

As Abbey was checking Jayla's vitals- not strictly necessary as the computer would alert them to any issues- the red alert klaxon sounded. She sighed nervously. They would have their work cut out for them pretty soon. For now, though, they needed to check the nine people they had in Sick Bay so they would be free to tend to new wounded. Abbey pressed her thumb to the monitor on Jayla's bio bed, indicating that she had been seen recently, and moved on to the next.

"How is she?" Katniss quietly whispered

Lucas moved into Jayla's room and made his way over to Abbey after checking on a few of the other patients they had. He had a feeling the day was going to bring them a lot more, but he was prepared for it, and hoped the rest of their staff would be, too. "How are the readings?"

Abbey smiled gently at both of them. "She's doing well," she answered. "She's dreaming right now. I always wonder what people are dreaming about." She shook her head. "She'll be all right, though. Probably sleep all day, but she'll be just fine."

"That's good to hear," Lucas said, looking to the sleeping form of the doctor before he looked back to the two women present. "Things could get busy again at any moment, so we need to be prepared for that. Of course, those who have serious injuries are to be treated first. From there, we'll triage everyone else and determine their order. Any questions?"

"None at all," answered Abbey. "We know what to do."

She had barely finished speaking when the intruder alert was added to the red alert. "Of course," muttered Abbey. Of course there would be intruders. She hurried out into main Sick Bay to finish checking on patients only to find all of them marked as checked. Well, that was convenient, because a nearby computer read-out was already spilling in injury reports. She hurried to ready a med-kit and waited for whoever was in charge of it to start reading off the injuries and locations.

Lucas wasn't too far behind Abbey when the second alert sounded. This was not a drill, and now most of the department's personnel were scattering to grab gear to tend to the wounded among their crew. He looked over the readout as the reports came through. "Multiple injured on deck six. Ballar, Sutherland and T'Lura, you three report to deck six. There's been impact on deck five, no breach reported. Blake, you take two others and go." He watched as more people scrambled. "Doctor Road and I will stay here and handle those who are able to come in on their own, or are brought in by others."

The second Dani was given her orders, she chose two other members and ran from sickbay to get to the area they were instructed to.

"Aye, sir," replied Abbey, handing off the med kit to one of the doctors going out to find patients where they were. She was used to being in that position, but it seemed that with Dr. Kij down, Dr. Abrams was using her as a second in command. She was fine with that. She'd done that as well as the CMO spot on the Patriot before the birth of her son lead her to step back in favor of spending more time with him. She glanced at the door as it swished open to reveal an ensign with blood covering half of his face being half carried by another ensign. "And so it begins," she said darkly. Hopefully, this wouldn't go on for too long.
