Mission:
The Finnean Crisis
Location: DS15
Timeline: MD5 || 1500 hours
Once the Medical team arrived, Jayla explained the situation and told them. To be honest, there wasn't a lot to explain. The crew of the station and ship had been released to the Black Hawk and they were to treat the wounded. While they were at it, they were logging who was among the prisoners. Simple enough. For now.
So far, Jayla had counted a lot of science and medical personnel, but very few engineers and no security. Still, she hadn't been keeping track for very long. "Sterek," she said as she approached the Vulcan. "What have you got so far?"
"We have three patients who require surgery, one case of sepsis currently in the ICU, seven bacterial infections, eighteen sprains, and various minor bruises and contusions on twenty-seven crew." Sterek had eschewed the lab coat in favour of scrubs today. "Psychologically, a high proportion of the crew are suffering from stress or related conditions and will likely require referral to counselling. Patients are still being catalogued, but I believe we have identified all the most critical cases."
"Doesn't sound too bad, does it?" she commented. "To be honest, I was expecting far worse. The Selubassari don't seem like to the sort to care much about who's hurt or why." She sighed. "Anyway, continue," she said.
He offered her his own PADD. "The vast majority of injuries were caused during the initial takeover of Deep Space fifteen. Aside from that, only two cases of injury by the Selubassari troops have been reported, both relatively minor, both involving resistance attempts by the patients in question." As hostage situations went, it wasn't the worst he'd seen, although that wasn't saying much.
"Well, at least we know they're not cruel," she replied, glancing over the list on the PaDD. "How about the personnel themselves? I mean, departments. I haven't come across any security officers yet, have you?"
"I have not. Neither have I encountered many Engineering or Operations officers." Sterek paused, then looked behind him. Most of the biobeds were occupied by seated patients; due to the volume of people here, all the worst cases had been moved to another room to receive attention. He raised his voice a little to address them. "Is there anybody here who might be able to inform me where your security personnel are?"
The patients all turned to look at each other, wondering either if anyone actually knew, or if those that knew were able to speak up. A lieutenant junior grade collared in maroon stood up to reply. "I do, Doctor."
Lucas looked toward the Lieutenant with the maroon collar that stood up. "Where are they?" he asked. "And are any of them injured?"
The lieutenant approached the three doctors in order to keep her voice low. "The Selubassari separated them from the rest of us when they imprisoned us. There were rumors..." She shook her head, completely unsure as to their validity. The last thing she wanted was to send someone on a wild goose chase.
Jayla nodded encouragingly. "Anything you can tell us would help," she said. "Even if it's just a rumor."
Sterek's voice was uncommonly gentle for a vulcan. "It may have some connection to the facts, even if only a tenuous one."
"They say that the security personnel were sent to the planet and divided up into labor camps," she said. "If they're not on the station, then that's where they'd be."
"Did they send the Engineering and Operations personnel with them?" Lucas asked. It made sense for that to have happened. He really couldn't imagine anyone owning up to being Security if they were asked by Selubassari guards.
The lieutenant could merely shrug. "I can't say," she replied. "I haven't seen any, but they only kept forty to fifty of us to a room. Few rations, little water. All they did was keep us alive." Her gaze turned downward, an indication that more than their physical health had been compromised.
Sympathetically, Jayla reached out a hand and squeezed her shoulder. "That'll change soon," she promised, and it was clear she was not just referring to the rations and water. "And thank you for the information."
"I think some counseling may not be a bad idea, either," the large man said, looking over the people in the room. "Either in group sessions or single. That would depend on what each of you would feel not comfortable with. Some may feel a one on one session may be the way to go, while others might like to be amongst their crew members that have gone through the same experience."
The lieutenant simply nodded and walked away, leaving the doctors in silence.
Before any of the doctors could speak, Doctor Kij's combadge chirped. "Black Hawk to Doctor Kij," came a disembodied female voice.
With a sigh, Jayla tapped her combadge. "Kij here," she said. "Go ahead."
"Doctor, you're needed back aboard ship," came the reply. "We've just received a body from the Vasco da Gama. We also had a medical emergency from the station involving the da Gama's CO."
A body. Wonderful. "Understood," Jayla replied wearily. "Kij out. Sterek, you're with me. We'll send a couple more in our place. For now, Abrams, you're in charge here. See that everyone gets treated. Send for a counselor if you think you need one."
"You will," put in Sterek quietly. His own experience of being held hostage was a long time ago, long enough that it no longer emotionally affected him, or not usually. Still, it had left him with a keen awareness of how enduring the trauma could be.
"Go," Abrams urged quietly. "I've got this under control."
Jayla nodded and tapped her combadge once more. "Kij to Black Hawk," she said. "Lieutenant Sterek and I are ready to come back aboard."
