One of the downsides of being a department head was working on daily reports, which is what Jayla was doing currently. She and Alex hadn’t bothered to attempt to stagger their arrivals in Sick Bay this morning- what was the point?- and they had gotten a lot of interested looks from the staff who were already there. But, nobody had said anything so far.

But it wasn’t going to last.

“Wotcher, Doc!”

Jayla glanced up to see Doctor Road leaning against the door frame of her office, arms crossed and a smug grin on her face. “Good Morning, Abbey,” she said. “What can I do for you?”

Abbey pushed off the door jam and stepped inside the office, closing the door behind her. “So,” she said, a knowing glint in her eyes. “You slept with him, dincha?”

“What? Who?”

“Oh, come off it!” replied Abbey, sitting across from Jayla. “Rylan! Everyone thinks you did a few days ago, but there was still tension between you. And then this morning, you turn up together, all grinning and relaxed. I said, they totally slept together. But then nurse Lane bet me that you did several days ago and now I’ve got to know!”

Jayla burst into a fit of giggles. “You made a bet with Lane?” she asked.

“Yes!” replied Abbey. “Come on! I’ve got 20 credits on this!”

In reply, Jayla grinned and waggled her eyebrows.

“Ha!” exclaimed Abbey. “I knew it! Details! Details! Well!” she added quickly. “Not those kinds of details. Just, you know, normal details. Like, how did it start out? What were you doing before all of that?”

“We went for a hike on the holodeck,” answered Jayla. “Someplace in Australia. I can’t remember the name of it. Anyway, then we stopped for a picnic lunch and we were just chatting, getting to know one another and watching the sunset. The mood was right. I tried to resist, but….” She shrugged.

“Why would you wanna resist?” Abbey asked incredulously. “He’s such a nice guy and he’s incredibly hot. I mean, don’t get me wrong; I love my husband, but I’m talking about you. You’re totally available. Why bother resisting a guy like Alexander Rylan?”

“Because we have to work together,” answered Jayla. “I didn’t want it to be awkward. But it got to the point that I couldn’t resist any more.”

Abbey raised her eyebrows in anticipation. “And?” she asked. “How was it?”

Jayla gave the other doctor a mischievous grin. “Really good,” she replied. “A bit rough. We had scratches and bites to heal up this morning before we came in.”

“Sounds a bit like pon farr with Selek,” Abbey mused, then winced. “Sorry! Too much information!”

“It’s okay,” laughed Jayla. “I’ve been in a relationship with a Vulcan before. I understand. It wasn’t quite that rough. But, it was fantastic. I’d forgotten how good it is with someone you truly love.”

“Love?” asked Abbey, grin widening. “Oh. My. GAWD! Are you guys that far already?”

Jayla grinned, feeling heat growing in her cheeks. “I mean, we said it,” she replied. “But yeah. I love him. And I really believe he loves me.”

“Wow!” said Abbey, sounding as giddy as Jayla felt. “That’s really exciting. I’m so happy for you!”

“Thanks,” replied Jayla with a goofy grin. “Now Go collect those credits from Lane. I’m assuming she’s going to have a million and one questions for me, too?”

“Probably,” agreed Abbey with a grin as she rose from the chair. “And I’m sorry, but the nurses are already talking. I try to stop them, but… well, you know how the gossip train is. At least they’re being nice.”

Jayla rolled her eyes. “I’ve convinced myself they’re just jealous,” she said.

Abbey grinned as she headed out the door. “They probably are,” she said. “Oi! Lane!” she called once the doors opened. “You owe me twenty credits!”

“What?!?!” came the shrieked reply. And in a matter of seconds, Lane was at the door. “Really?” she asked Jayla. “Not three days ago? Just last night?”

“Sorry, Penny,” Jayla replied apologetically.

Penny made a sound like an angry cat and stomped off. Jayla wasn’t concerned, though; Penny had been grinning as she went.

With a sigh, Jayla went back to her morning report.
