Checking Out the Flight Deck

550 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: New Voyages
Location: Flight Deck
Timeline: Current

Having spent a couple of hours in Engineering introducing herself to the staff and and issuing orders that would begin the process of evaluating the Black Hawk's current operational status from an engineering perspective, Harper picked up a kit and headed to the Flight Deck to comply with the Captain's orders. Because she was, at heart, a social being and because she wanted the Chief's cooperation and input, her first stop was to look for Lt. Armani and make herself and her intentions known. She stopped the first person she saw, who obligingly pointed him out, and then headed directly toward him.

She walked quickly, her waist-length, dark as night hair pulled up into a ponytail that swung in counterpoint to the sway of her hips, and stopped in front of him, smiling. "Lieutenant Armani," she said. "Harper Dane. I'm the new Chief Engineer. The Captain asked me to stop by and take a look at the Flight Deck. Make sure that everything was working to your satisfaction."

Armani has only popped into the flight deck to check around. He was currently stood signing off orders that a young and insistent Petty Officer. The interruption was more than welcome.

Armani smiled at the Petty Officer as she walked off and turned towards Lt Dane. "I think everything is under control around here, is there anything specific that you want to check over or go through, ma'am?" he asked.

"The Captain just wants me to make sure that everything is ready here, that there won't be any problems once things get busy. If you don't mind, I'll have a look around, do some checks, and make sure that everything is working as it should."

Armani smiled at the officer, "be my guest, if you find anything, let me know and I will get someone onto it." He paused before walking off, "Do you need anything else, sir?" he asked.

Harper shook her head, sending a slight undulation through her long ponytail, and smiled. "Its more about what I can do for you," she said. "I don't expect any problems, the Hawk is a well maintained ship from what I've been seeing. But still, as much as I love a surprise," she said with a merry twinkle in her gray eyes, "there are some surprises better left to the truly inventive mind of my training officer back at the Academy. That man had a gift for the weird."

She found a console and got to work, running through diagnostics, checking calibrations and alignments all over the flight deck. She was slender, supple, and more flexible than most people thought possible, good traits for both a Deltan and an engineer ... they didn't make a space she couldn't fit into if she needed to ... though her training officer seemed to have taken that as a personal challenge. Two hours later, she dusted off her hands and extricated herself from the crawl space. She looked around and found the Lieutenant, then walked over, kit bag swaying gently as she moved.

"Good news, Lieutenant," she said as she gestured with one hand toward the flight deck. "Everything is in good working order. I don't foresee any problems. If you need anything or something doesn't seem quite right, contact me and I'll have someone here right away."
