Mission:
Extinction
Location: Science Lab
Timeline: Mission Day 12 at 1000
There was finally some time, time to work on experiments and such she'd been putting off. After what her brother had told her, she needed something to focus on.
That was where this came in. Experiments, even small ones, helped calm her mind most of the time. Not that she wasn't going to be thinking about it constantly, but the distraction might help.
As she got to the lab, she noticed someone else was already there: Crewman Lynn Aylin. The crewman jumped hearing the doors. "Lieutenant! I wasn't expecting anyone else to be here this time of day. I figured you'd all be on duty elsewhere."
"Easy, Aylin, it's okay. I don't have bridge duty or anything like that and figured I'd take some time in here." Zayna wandered over to see what was being worked on. "Anything interesting over here?"
Aylin shrugged, "Not really. Just some random chemical tests. I'd rather be stargazing but that's hard to do this early. And, my roommate snores and works nights so...can't do it there either."
Zay smirked, "Been there before. I'm sure we can find some stars to gaze at if you really want. Though, right now I think I want to do busy work. Want some help?" She picked up the PADD that had the information on it. "Very simple experiments even. Those can be fun."
"If you really want to help. I mean, we can likely come up with some crazy things here if we tried to." Lynn laughed, "Or make things explode on accident."
"I've done that before too actually. Not here, but other posts." Zayna wandered over to where some of the chemicals were stored and grabbed a few. "Doesn't hurt to test things in case we run into them and need to know whether or not they react to each other, right?" She laid the chemicals out, most of them being common ones but that were not found together in many places.
Lynn laughed. "I suppose so!" She cleaned up what she'd been doing and made some space. "So, which ones first?"
Grabbing two random ones, not even checking the labels, Zayna handed them to Lynn. "Just start randomly. Besides, it'll be fun."
There were beakers, test tubes, and multiple other things laying around with chemical concoctions in them once they were finished setting up. None of them had been heated up or drastically cooled down yet after the thirty minutes of setup, but they already had two burn marks on the lab table.
"Djinx isn't going to like this mess," Zay finally said as she was putting out a tiny fire where one of the beakers had exploded, causing their third burn mark on the table. "And sickbay isn't going to like it if I have to go in with needing burns treated either."
Once the fire was put out and and those chemicals cleared away, and the reaction notated, Aylin came over to Ryler with the medkit. "They also don't have to know. As long as the burns don't get too bad, we can fix them up here." She started working on the burns. "And yeah, Djinx isn't going to like that we have to work on repairing these tables...again."
Letting her hands get treated, Zayna sighed. "Keeps us on our toes though. Maybe we should avoid heating up more than one or two at a time." She looked back to Aylin. "Been able to get any bridge time in? You've likely heard what the mission is."
"Heard what the mission is, but haven't been up there. Why in the hell would Starfleet send us after pirates anyways?"
"Honestly," Zayna stated as the burns were healed up, "I don't know. I wish I did. Bridge shifts can be dull when nothing shows up. I've gotten a lot of reports done, charted some stars, but other than that? The sensor readings don't really change. Maybe you should be glad you haven't been assigned up there yet. I could still give you shifts if you want."
Lynn laughed as she put the medical tools away. "No, I think I'm good. Once something starts happening, sure. I don't get much time up there anyways. I think I'll stick to my normal duties for now."
"Can't say I blame you," Zay quietly said as she finished clearing things away. "Back to the tests? I'll worry about reporting this mess to Djinx later. Besides, we'll have chemical mixture results to give him too."
"Let's do it. And...hope there aren't any more burns to deal with."
