Mission: Rude Awakening
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Mission Day 6 0800

Julius was never a morning person, he always preferred to set twenty alarms before waking up. But despite his late arrival to Starbase 11 and subsequently the USS Black Hawk he realized that today was going to be busy. He groaned as he realized that sleeping in was not going to happen. They seemed very eager to get him squared away so he can start work. Making his way down the corridor he exchanged a few friendly hello's to his new comrades until the familiar smell of disinfectants became apparent.

Peering around he noticed a Trill and exchanged a friendly smile. "Good morning, I am Lieutenant Adronaide I had an appointment at 0800?"

Jayla turned a bright smile to the man. "Yes, of course," she said cheerfully. "I'm Doctor Kij. Right this way," she added, leading him towards a biobed. "Hop up here and we'll get started," she said, taking out her tricorder.

Staring at her in a moment he reached out to his gift, reading someones empathy was just like taking in a breath of a new scent. As soon as you inflated your lungs it left an impression, her excitement rubbed off on him. His smile widened suddenly the feeling of hopping on that bioped sounded not only like a good idea but an exciting adventure. Hopping on the bed he looked back to her with his black eyes.

"It's nice to meet you Ma'am, how long have you served on the Blackhawk?" The thought of being groggy faded, instead he was just jazzed to get a check up. Thousands of questions popped up as if he just made a new friend in grade school.

"Not long. Um..." Jayla trailed off, thinking. "Almost a month, I think. It's a good ship. I enjoy it," she added with another of her sickeningly bright grins as she started her scans. "Blood pressure's a little high," she commented, a rare frown creasing her brow. "Heightened cortisol levels... and... " The frown deepened as she recognized the presence of amphetamines and hallucinogens. The amphetamines could have been prescribed, but hallucinogens couldn't. She chewed her lip. Did she have a druggie on her hands? Oh, dear. "Have you been-" she cut herself off as she looked at his face. He didn't seem to be seeing what was in front of him.

As the scan began he could not help but have his thoughts wander. The familiar hum of the tricorder which did nothing but bring back old memories. When he looked up for a moment Jayla appeared to him as Cahlee, the Orion who was his obsession... With that look, the look that killed him. A mix of pure disappointment and fear as the vibrations began to go out of control. The whole room fell around them, sweat began to drip from his face as his heart rate spiked. Looking back the visions ended but the vibrations remained.

The chemical induced paranoia ensued, was this some sick joke? Did she read his personnel files? "MAKE THE VIBRATIONS STOP!" He felt the same vibration, the same one that marked the downfall of his career. As if his visions were real he desperately stood up to find cover. That was when he collapsed, his vision blurred and the cardiac arrest began. Whatever he ingested caused his brain chemistry to go out of whack... Whatever he ingested was killing him....

Jayla gasped and started shouting automatically. "Code red!" she called and five nurses sprang into action. "Get him onto the bio bed. One. Two. Three," she counted and they all lifted him easily onto the bed. "He's going into cardiac arrest. Get a blood sample. I want to know what those drugs are in his system in no less than three minutes. Hypospray loaded with..." she checked his weight and did a quick calculation, then rattled off a drug and an amount. In a matter of seconds, the hypospray was pressed into her hand and she quickly pressed it to his neck. "Hurley, how's the toxicology report coming?" she asked the technician in charge.

"Almost there, sir," replied Hurley. "I'll have the medicines to counteract it shortly."

"Good," said Jayla, monitoring his heart rate. It was stabilizing, but still far less steady than she'd like. Hopefully, the drugs to counteract the amphetamines and hallucinogens would help. If not, she'd have to think of something else. "Hold on, Lieutenant. We'll get you all patched up. And then you're totally going through rehab."

As the light faded all he could think is what was going on... Was this some prank? His vitals remained eratic but Jayla did her job and did it well.

Hurley frowned while reading some information on the PADD. "Ma'am something doesn't add up, I went over the patient's medical history, this is the first time the patient has popped positive for any form of drug. His last checkup was four days ago when he out-processed the USS Normandy should we page Lieutenant Commander Rosario to come down here?"

Jayla hadn't thought about poisoning. But, now that Hurley brought it up, she figured it was worth looking into. "Probably not a bad idea," she said. "Just in case. Got that report, yet?"

The toxicology report gave her the information she needed and in about a minute, she had the medicine needed to counteract the substances in a hypospray and was pressing it to his neck. Almost immediately, his blood pressure normalized and his heart began straightening out. With a sigh of relief, she motioned to the nurse who was standing by with the defibrillator and she replaced the paddles and powered down the machine. "I think he's going to pull through," she said. "Either way, I'm keeping him overnight, just in case."

"Yes ma'am, I will page Lieutenant Commander Rosario," pressing against the comm Hurley began to speak. "Lieutenant Commander Rusario, we have a situation at Sickbay that needs your attention."

=====

Roget was in his office when Sickbay summoned him. He didn't know what the issue was, nor did it sound particularly urgent, especially since the call wasn't for a security team, but rather for him specifically. "On my way," he responded. He rose from his desk and exited into the security lobby. He was glad to see that the front desk was actually staffed. "I'll be in Sickbay," he told the dark blue hued Bolian crewman. She nodded curtly in response.

=====

He walked into Sickbay. He wasn't sure who had contacted him, so he didn't know who to look for.

"Commander del Rosario," said Jayla, spotting him almost as soon as he entered. "Over here. We have a possible case of poisoning. We're not exactly sure."

Roget lumbered toward the Trill physician. "And you suspect it was an assault rather than accidental or self-inflicted?"

"I'll admit that it's possible," said Jayla. "But, he has no record of previous use. The amphetamines could be prescription; I haven't read his entire Medical history, yet. But, the hallucinogens are the same ones the Romulans used to use to control their prisoners. Oh, don't give me that look! I'm not suggesting that Romulans are trying to control him, but someone might be. Or, someone may have known he was taking amphetamines and slipped him the hallucinogens, knowing of the dangerous interaction between them. In any case, I think it's more likely that he got at least one of the drugs without his knowledge."

Roget looked at the young man laying on the bed. "Let me know when he is coherent. And please send a copy of his medical records to me." He looked at the brown haired Trill doctor. "I can station one of my men here if you think he's a security concern."

"Well, either he is or someone who's after him is, so I think that won't be a bad idea," Jayla answered. "He's stabilizing, so it shouldn't be too long before he's coherent again, although I'd prefer to keep him under until the drugs are completely out of his system. That could take several hours."

"I'll have Chief Andropov assign someone from his team," Roget stated. "Anything else I can do?"

"Not at the moment," sighed Jayla. "We'll keep you posted on his condition."

"Thank you Doctor," del Rosario said before leaving.
