Settling In

847 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Rude Awakening
Location: Personal Quarters

Camila entered her new quarters and looked at the luggage that the starbase had beamed to the Black Hawk and sighed. She knew she should have taken so much with her, but the items she did want to retain were the ones that she couldn't easily replace. True, there were always the replicators, but originals that had been handcrafted were much rarer and harder to find. Some of the items she had had commissioned and wasn't about to part with.

Going to the first container, she opened it and smiled when she saw Mister Squiggles, her favorite stuffed squirrel that looked like a werewolf. She had had him since before she entered the Academy and had no plans to ever get rid of him. He also served to scare any male crewmembers who got too fresh with her and always gave her a giggle.

Next, she pulled out her favorite violin mug and looked at it. A young lady she had been dating at the Academy had it custom made for her when they formed a band while there, but while the relationship didn't last, the mug brought up fond memories and it was a really nice conversation piece. Setting it aside, she saw her skull silverware, Skull cups, and her Skull tea service. Putting them all on a table until she could figure out where to place them permanently, she went to the next container.

Opening it, she saw that it contained her prize collection of violins; there was the red one, the blue flame one, her blue oine and her favorite Maroon violin. Placing them in her bedroom with Mister Squiggles, she headed back into the living room to open the biggest container which held her chair.

Ten minutes of tugging, pushing and pulling later, she finally had it positioned off to the left of the couch where she could see the door to her quarters and not be in the way of anything else. Going to the replicator, she ordered a chocolate Raktajino in her violin mug and settled down. "My first ship assignment in the Gamma Quadrant," she mused as she looked around. "I hope it's not as boring as DS Eleven, but I doubt it will be. Maybe I should replicate some posters to give these walls a little life."

She wished that she hadn't had been required to leave Big Bertha in the Armory, but people frowned on Security officers who walked around carrying hand cannons. She also hoped for an opportunity to take her hoverbike out for a ride when they had planet-side away missions, but there was always the holodeck for the thrill rides she loved so much.

Drinking her Raktajino, she picked up a PADD and began to look through the crew roster and attempted to memorize the people that she would be serving with until who knew when. Captain Geisler seemed like a rock steady commander and had twenty years of active duty under his belt and had been a medical officer prior to going into Command. Going down the list, she perused through Commander Kos's record, smiling when she saw the woman had been an Engineer before going into Command. "If the Captain's broke, it's the Executive Officer's job to fix them," she laughed to herself.

She had already met Lieutenant Commander del Rosario, but looking into his service record, she saw that he was a career Security officer and had cut his teeth on many missions and that he seemed to be a bachelor. Not that she planned on dating the hardened Chief of Security; he was a bit too old for him, and seemed like old beef jerky. Shaking her head, she continued down the list of department heads and others she would be serving with.

An hour later, she set the PADD down and rubbed her eyes, deciding to call it a night while she had the chance. Tomorrow, she would begin working on a outline for the Security Chief for the Search and Rescue training she had proposed and hoped that more than just Security personnel would take it. It was a valuable skill and she felt it would benefit many of the crew members on away missions and give the Black Hawk an edge in the Gamma Quadrant. Rinsing her cup, she set it upside down to dry and headed to bed.
