804 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Outbreak
Location: Sick Bay

After what had happened to Bast, Jayla had decided that the other two joined Trills on the ship should be checked. Her own terazapine levels were a bit on the high end of normal. Now, there was only one joined Trill left on board. Vaguely, she wondered how three joined Trills had made it onto the senior staff on the same ship. Had she been superstitious, she might have thought it meant something, but as it was, she just dismissed it as an odd coincidence.

Lieutenant Jarveth Adan was on his way to Sickbay to see Dr. Kij. After what had happened to Lieutenant Bast, it was important for him to have a check-up. Being under the control of the Consortium like Bast was was frightening.

Entering Sickbay, he saw the Trill physician on duty. "Dr. Kij," said he with a smile on his face, "I'm here to see you."

Jayla looked up and smiled cheerfully at Adan. "Thank you for coming," she said, taking out her tricorder. "I thought it would be better to check now and keep an eye on things than to find out after we've done something. How are you feeling? Hop up here, please," she added, indicating the nearest bio-bed.

Jarveth obeyed and hopped up on the bio bed indicated. "I'm feeling fine, actually," he said. "I don't think anything is wrong, but it's good I have the check-up."

"Absolutely," said Jayla, running preliminary scans. "Well, these readings look good, but I want to take an actual blood sample, too, just to make sure." She turned to get the necessary equipment.

Jarveth rolled up his sleeve. The last thing he wanted was bloodwork this way, but he wasn't about to admit it. Smiling, he said, "Ready when you are, Doc."

Jayla grinned, recognizing the kind of smile he was giving her. She took the sample as quickly as she could. "There, all done," she announced, turning to put the sample into the computer. "It'll just take half a moment..." She watched the computer as it worked and soon, the results were back. "Wow, your terazapine levels are textbook perfect," she announced, pointing to the number on the screen. "Check this out. It's beautiful."

"Textbook perfect sounds great," said Jarveth. "So, the terazapine levels are how they controlled Lieutenant Bast?"

Jayla nodded. "Yeah," she said. "It broke the connection with the Symbiont and left him open to psychic attack. I have no idea if it only works on the newly joined or if it would work on someone like me. I've been joined since I was 15," she explained.

Jarveth couldn't help but shudder. Losing touch with one's symbiant scare the hell out of a Trill.

"Dear God!" cried he. "Poor Bast. I was only joined about six months ago. I might not have been chosen because I was never on DS11 like he was. My transfer came unexpectedly too. But if they had done to me what they had done to him..." Jarveth shuddered again.

"That's about how long he's been joined," said Jayla. "I can't even imagine what he's been through."

"I don't know how I would feel after such a violation," said Adan. "I'm sure Bast feels guilty even though he's not. It would take another joined Trill to even begin understanding."

Jayla nodded in agreement. "I know I'd feel awfully guilty," she said. "Well, anyway, you seem to be in perfect health. As far as your terazapine levels go anyway," she added with a grin.

Jarveth glanced at the doctor. "Does this mean I can go?" he asked her.

"Sure," said Jayla with a grin. "Unless you want to do your physical a couple of months early."

Jarveth considered for a moment. "Might as well get it over with while I'm here. Don't you think so?"

"It's completely up to you, of course," said Jayla with a grin, pulling out her tricorder and beginning preliminary scans.. "But, if our positions were reversed, I'd probably do it, too. Any complaints?"

Jarveth sighed. "I keep getting these headaches," he said. "I think it might be eye strain, but I'm not sure."

"Let's see," she said, running a quick scan of his head and eyes. "Well, the good news is there's no abnormalities," she said, studying the results on her tricorder. "So at least we know it's not a tumor. My best guess would be stress. Or too little sleep. Has in just been the past few days or weeks? Or has it been longer than that?"

Jarveth sighed. "It's probably stress. I've been reading a lot of data PADDs lately. It's only been the past week."

"That's probably it, then," said Jayla. "Try to take a break every couple hours at least and see me if it continues. For now, though, I'm declaring you fit for duty."
