The Blues Are Calling

902 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Outbreak
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 6

Mila woke up feeling exhausted the day after her and Aidan had came back from shore leave and she frowned as she realized that she still had a sore throat. After she fed Chow, she quickly dressed in her uniform and headed down to sickbay. It wouldn't do to report to the Captain and have to repeat herself, so she found herself walking into Medical after a short turbolift ride.

"I need something for a sore throat a and a pick me up," she told a nurse. "I think I caught a bug on New Risa."

"We have a lot of that right now," Hurley told her. "Come on over here and have a seat. Dr. Kij wants to see everyone with these symptoms." He led her to the waiting area, where there were a few chairs. "She'll be with you in a moment."

"Thank you," Mila said and headed over to the waiting area to take a seat. "I hope it is not a virulent infection. I spent a lot of time with my boyfriend there."

"Hopefully not," replied Hurley. "I'll let her know you're here."

A few moments after Hurley left, Jayla turned up, smiling as usual. "Good morning," she said. "Mila Rasputin, right?"

"Da," Mila agreed. "I am. I did not know that a Captain's Yeoman was so well known."

"Not usually, but I am the Chief Medical Officer," said Jayla. "I have to know everybody. Come with me and I'll give you a quick once over." She let the other woman to a free bio bed. "Hop up here," she instructed, pulling out her tricorder.

Mila walked with her and got up on the bio bed. "I wonder if it could be related to me falling in the water when we went shuttle surfing?" she asked. "I did not get dry again until we were back at the hotel."

"Possibly," said Jayla, running some preliminary scans. "Could be something in the water that causes irritation. I'm not sure, yet. Okay, open up, let me see the throat," she said, holding up a little flashlight.

Mila opened her mouth and let the doctor do her thing, staying silent while she did so.

Again, no irritation, no redness, no swelling. Jayla was puzzled. "All right," she said. "I'll give you a mild painkiller and a stimulant. Come back tomorrow if you don't feel any better, okay?" she said, turning to load a hypospray.

"Nothing?" Mila sked. "But there must be something. I will come back, though, if it gets worse."

"That means it's probably nothing," Jayla assured her, pressing the hypospray to Mila's neck. "If it were something, your body would be trying to fight it."

"Then why is my throat sore and I am exhausted?" Mila asked her. "I got enough sleep while I was there."

Jayla didn't like to say that she didn't know. It had nothing to do with actually admitting her ignorance, but that she felt that patients didn't like to hear that the doctor didn't know what was wrong with them. "Not to worry," she said. "It's probably just a few remnants of some irritant that has worked its way out of your system."

"Very well," Mila said. "I just hope that I am able to get some sleep tonight. I do not want the Captain to think that I just lay there and do nothing."

"A lot of people are in this same predicament," replied Jayla. "I'm sure he'd understand." And if he didn't, Jayla would have a word with him.

Mila studied the woman for a moment as she remembered how the Captain had almost referred to the Doctor informally before he headed to meet the Ambassador with his plus one. Then she shrugged mentally and smiled as memories of Aidan came to mind. "I am thinking that he would have his hands full if he tried to fight the Chief Medical Officer. The word of a Chief Medical Officer is law on ship, da?"

"Mostly," said Jayla with a grin. "I mean, where medical matters are concerned, absolutely. If I say someone is off duty for a week, not even the President of the Federation could trump that decision."

"Would it be possible to get something which I could take with me to get some sleep tonight?" Mila asked as she looked at the Trill Doctor.

"Sure," said Jayla, turning to a nearby cupboard and pulling out a small bottle of melatonin capsules. "Melatonin," she said, shaking two out of the bottle and slipping them into a little plastic bag. "It's natural, so it shouldn't leave you groggy in the morning."

"Thank you," Mila said as she accepted them. "Is there anything else that may help? Tea with honey or anything you could recommend?"

"Oh, of course chamomile tea," replied Jayla. "And reading. For some reason, reading before bed always makes me sleepy."

"I will take that under advisement," Mila said. "Am I cleared for duty?"

"For now, yes," answered Jayla. "Just remember- come back if you feel worse, okay? Actually, if you don't feel better tomorrow."

"I will," Mila promised as she came off the biobed and tucked the bag of pills into her hand. "Thank you, Doctor Kij," she said and headed out to report on duty.

Jayla sighed as she turned back to main Sick Bay. She had no idea what to make of this.
