Mission:
Risky Business
Location: Sickbay
Having spent the previous several hours studying the past mission logs, Thiago needed a break. The ship and crew had been through hell. Enough that is had caused Commander Kos to leave. He got up from the couch in his quarters, deciding that he needed a walk.
As he strolled the corridors, he allowed his mind to wander in an effort to not dwell on the Black Hawk's history. He passed crew members from various species. He observed a couple ahead of him holding hands. One of them was Trill. The sight of the telltale spots reminded him that he had yet to visit the beautiful Doctor Kij.
"No time like the present," he said to himself before changing direction to the nearest turbolift. Normally he wouldn't report for a transfer physical out of uniform, but, as he was off duty, he didn't see the harm. The good Doctor would just have to deal with him in casual clothes.
Jayla, meanwhile, was busily being not busy. Nurse Lane had insisted that she take it easy today. Seriously, the woman was like a little mother. It made Jayla wonder if she had kids.
Hearing the doors swish opened, she turned to see the new XO entering. Glancing around for Lane, she made a bee-line for him. She was tired of just overseeing everything. She just wanted something to do. "Hello, Commander," she said, smiling cheerfully as always. "What can I do for you?"
That smile, he thought, taking in the Trill's beaming grin. He flashed a smile of his own in return, an act that seemed automatic given the doctor's friendly nature. "Are you busy? I don't want to disturb you if you are."
"I am the exact opposite of busy," said Jayla. "I'm pretty much just making sure that everything is running smoothly. I could use something to actually do."
"Since I'm new here...," Teixeira began, hoping she could guess the rest.
"Ah, yes!" she said cheerfully. "Incoming physical! Come with me," she added, leading him over to a nearby biobed.
Teixeira followed Kij, watching her brown curls bounce as she walked. "How do you like it here on the Black Hawk?" he inquired. Even though he was here for an exam, he decided to us the time to get to know the good doctor as well. He was trying to have some face time with all of the senior staff. His previous experience as an XO had shown him how important it is to really know the senior staff. They had to feel comfortable with him, to trust him. And he them.
"It's nice," she replied, pulling out her tricorder and setting up some equipment. "The crew are friendly- mostly, anyway- and the facilities are the second best I've seen on a Starship. Well, okay, tied for first. Granted, I've only served on three starships, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt." She grinned. "How about you?" she asked, motioning for him to sit on the bio bed. "How do you like it so far?"
His eyes focused on her radiant smile. "It's looking good already," Thiago answered with a smile of his own. "I apologize for being under dressed," he said, looking down at his sky blue v-neck tee and off-white shorts.
"That doesn't matter," she said, waving her hand as if to brush away the comment. "I'm not sure it's possible to be under dressed for a physical," she added with another of her grins. She began the scans. "How have you been feeling lately?" she asked. "Any complaints?"
"I'll remember that for next time, Doctor," he said with a playful grin. "I try to take good care of myself. Work out, eat well... There have been a few things in the past: broken arm, broken ankle, dislocated knee.... that sort of thing. From what I've seen in the ship's logs, you've seen far worse things around here recently."
Jayla let out a single huff of laughter. "That's putting it mildly," she said humorlessly. "But, we figured it out. Now we're just trying to find the people responsible. I'll personally ring their sorry little necks. Sorry," she said sheepishly. "But, they killed a lot of people. As a doctor, I suppose I can't let that lie."
He raised his hands in a gesture of submission. "Remind me not to get on your bad side. If you have a bad side, that is."
"I do, but it's incredibly difficult to get on," she told him, checking the tricorder.
Teixeira chuckled. "Good to know, Doctor." He waited a few moments, while Kij continued her scans, before speaking again. "What do your friends call you?"
"Mostly they call me Jayla," she replied. "My sister and a few other people call me Jay. A few people on board call me Doc, even when I'm not on duty. I answer to all three," she said, poking at a few buttons on her tricorder.
"I'll stick with Doctor for now. Maybe I can work my way up to Jayla," he said with a smile. "How does one become your friend, Doctor? Dinner perhaps?"
She grinned. "That's a start," she said. "Although, I do insist on not being called Doctor while off duty."
"Excellent. I find that I enjoy my assignments more when I've got friends." He tried to look at the tricorder display. "How am I?"
"Everything looks good," she said with a grin. "I was just stalling so I could talk to you," she joked. "Seriously, though, you're cleared for duty."
The Doctor's admission caused Thiago to grin again. "In that case, Doctor," he said, purposely over accentuating her title, "I should probably get going. As much as I enjoy your company, I still have a lot of work to do. Can't give the Captain a bad first impression."
Jayla grinned. "Certainly not," she replied. "Have a good day, Commander. I'm sure we'll see one another around."
"I certainly hope so, dear Doctor," he confirmed, countering Kij's grin with a playful smile of his own.
As he left, Jayla couldn't resist taking a good look. Nurse Lane caught her, of course, and she didn't hear the end of it for the rest of the day.
