Meeting the Doc [Backpost]

Posted on 10 Jul 2016 @ 12:30am by Commander Jayla Kij

955 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Risky Business
Location: Summers Quarters, Sickbay
Timeline: MD 1 0700 Hours

Isobel Summers stepped into the shower stall and under the gushing deluge of steaming water. She leaned back against the wall and allowed the calming rhythm of the spraying torrent to pour over her skin. Her shoulders and back ached from the long and cramped journey to the Black Hawk.

She had only arrived a few hours earlier and took the opportunity to unpack and get some rest in anticipation of meeting her new department head and reporting to sickbay for the mundane medical.

As she rinsed the water through her hair, she wondered how many of her new 'colleagues' were aware of her history. Would she be the new crew member that people would gossip about followed by the awkward silences that followed when she entered a room? Or would they all be to ignorant and self indulged to care about her past?

'Stuff them', she thought to herself as she turned the water off, deftly stepped out of the stall and grabbed the towel, wrapping it around herself. Grabbing a second towel, she folded it quickly around her sopping hair as she padded toward the door, dripping water all over the deck as she went.

After she dried and tied her hair back into the usual business knot on top of her head she straightened her uniform and headed for Sickbay as pre-arranged earlier that day.

Isobel entered the Infirmary and stopped for a moment to take in the surroundings. She had always had a strong interest in Medicine and initially selected medical as her first preference at the Academy many years earlier.

Jayla spotted the young woman who entered, mostly because of the gold uniform. Anyone not in blue automatically stood out. She headed in that direction with her customary smile in place. "Hello," she said cheerfully. "I'm Doctor Kij. How may I help you?"

"Lieutenant Summers reporting as ordered."

"Oh, yes, for your physical," said Jayla, grin broadening as it always seemed to when she wanted to smile but was already doing so. "Yes, come right over here," she added, leading her to a nearby biobed and indicating that she should be seated in it.

Isobel moved across the floor to the biobed as instructed, her hands clasped behind her back. "I appreciate you giving me time to settle in before calling me down here." She stated with a hint of sarcasm as she propped herself onto the bio-bed.

Jayla's brow wrinkled slightly as she tried to figure out if Sommers had needed a bit more time to settle in that she'd given her. "I always try to leave a little time," she said, taking out her tricorder and starting preliminary scans, "but things are about to get hectic here. Or at least they might. I'm really not sure how this is going to go, but I thought, well, we should get this over with before all hell breaks loose. If it does."

"Hmph." Summers grunted.

Jayla tried not to take it personally. Some people just didn't like doctors. "How are you feeling today?" she asked, watching the results of her scan as they came in. "Any complaints?"

"I'm feeling very well." Isobel was non-committal in her response.

"Good," said Jayla, grinning again. "Then hopefully everything should be perfect and we can get you out of here with minimal hassle."

Summers raised an eyebrow ignorantly. "Lieutenant Pasquale?" She quizzed, "what's she like?" Although she tried not to show, she was nervous. In her previous assignment Isobel had been the Department Head until her reprimand and with her demotion and the thought of serving under someone else it gave her more dissatisfaction then she cared to acknowledge.

"Uh, she's fair," answered Jayla, slightly confused as to where that question came from. "Strict though. I'm her friend and she told me off during SAR training."

"Great." Isobel muttered aloud, "Are we almost done here?"

"Not quite," answered Jayla, switching to secondary scans. "All preliminary scans are normal. Just have the more in-depth stuff to do."

"Is that code for stalling?" Summers mused, not waiting for a reply, "This ship? Her Captain? Anything you can tell me that may actually interest me? Some gossip?"

"Captain's a nice guy," she replied with a grin. "Gossip, hm... Let me see. I know the Captain was seeing someone, but they've decided they're better as friends. One of the Cadets has been seen in the company of one of the security ensigns. Oh! And Doctor Road has the most adorable little boy you have ever seen in your entire life! Seriously, if you get a chance to, you have to talk to him! He looks totally Vulcan but he smiles easier than even I do. And he's got these dimples that you just wouldn't believe."

"I don't particularly like children." Summers lied, "as for the Captain, I'm yet to meet him although will need to query if this is a starship or a love boat." She sighed heavily, not waiting for a responce, "whats that?" The instrument used by the CMO seemed to come to life.

"Well, you did ask for gossip after all," snickered Jayla as her tricorder lit up. "It looks like you've given birth in the past," she said, brow wrinkling; no child had come along with her. "Maybe as long ago as five years. Is that accurate?"

"No." Summers stated abruptly standing from the biobed. "I think your instruments are malfunctioning and we're done here."

Jayla blinked. Okay, so maybe she'd given the baby up and was sensitive about it. She knew her tricorder was fine because it had just been calibrated three days ago. Never mind. "I'll have it checked," she said. "You're done. Cleared for duty."
