422 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Rude Awakening
Location: Starbase 11

Perei had received word that she would be allowed time away as well. She had not quite expected it as the science chief kept his staff busy. This day she had a backpack on her back with some needed items to go assist with some ancient items that had been brought to the starbase for the science department there to study.

Her expertise was going to be beneficial to them as their archeologist was on maternity leave. Perei stepped lightly onto the base and glanced around. It was a busy place, people were everywhere. As Perei walked she peered around, her eyes searched for things that she had not seen before anywhere and for shops, shops where one could stop and perhaps obtain a book or some other unique item of interest. Perei did not pay much attention to where she was headed and someone brusquely bumped into her shoulder and continued on without so much as a howdy do, or an apology. She rubbed at it as turned and called out quietly "So sorry, I’ll watch where I'm going next time."

"Oh really?" A voice said behind her as she felt herself bump into another semi-hard object. Objects clattered as they bumped against one another and unto the metal decking of the base.

Perei winced as the sound and turned, her eyebrows puckered together in an apology. "I'm soooo sorry. I really am, here let me help you straighten up." She reached out and bent over to help pick a few books that had scattered onto the deck. As the two of them reached down to procure the items up off the deck at the same time as the other person did. The two knocked their noggins together.

Perei let out a yelp and jerked up which in turn she hit her shoulder against the table once more and caused more items to tumble around. This time she put her hands on the table to steady herself and the table. Her sincere tone echoed the same words as before. "I am sooo sorry, please let me assist you."

“No, no, you are a hindrance not a help.” The man replied as he met her eyes for a long moment and shook his head. “Please just be on your way before you destroy my inventory.”

Perei muttered as she turned to leave. “I really am sorry.”

“Begone” He waved his webbed hands at her.

Perei hurried off to meet her contact.
