Mission:
Click Three Times
Location: Starbase/ USS Black Hawk
Timeline: Backpost
Arjin looked up to the star expanse stretching out before him. Oblivious to anything or anyone around him in the vast dining hall of the star base.
For once he was not even enjoying the beauty of space. He just stared whilst slowly picking at his food with his fork. He was waiting for the USS Black Hawk to dock so that he could transfer to his new assignment and get on with his life.
But even thinking of his new ship, an Akira Class, could not keep his mind from wandering. Wandering back to the Scorpio and it’s XO. “Darned you Ieuan”, he thought, “Why did you have to get under my skin so much?”
Arjin had alway tried to avoid getting caught into a relation with a co-worker. Let alone a senior officer. Much to the dissatisfaction of his symbiont. But he had let his guard down when it came to the Betazoid first officer of the Scorpio. And he had to admit that he had liked their time together. His tendency to dark moods had lifted whilst having someone he had become to trust close to him.
But then the consortium had come along and started messing things up. Messing Starfleet up. Messing people up. And in doing so having him ordered onto a new ship.
He scooped up a small bite of his salad and mechanically brought the nurturance to his mouth.
His thoughts going back to their last conversation before he left the Scorpio. When he had to tell Iuan he had gotten new marching orders and they were not going to see each other for a long time. The atmosphere had not been cheerful to say the least. In fact the evening had been a total disaster. They both had their own scars and the fact of another goodbye had not fallen too well.
But hey, as a Starfleet officer you were supposed to go where the big guys sent you. And in his case it was going to be the new Chief Science Officer of the Black Hawk.
With a sigh, he pushed back his bowl and started tapping his padd. He had to get acquainted with the Akira design and with his new department crew as quickly as possible. He brought up the schematics first. Familiarizing himself with the ships layout first. He did not want to be asking around where to go or where to find his quarters, office or the science labs on his first day. Pride forbade that all right.
Arjin was in the middle of reading the personnel file of one of his department heads. Which he hoped would be up to their task since he did not want to inherit a department in disarray.
Suddenly a voice behind him startled him.
“Excuse me, Sir. But you requested to be informed when the USS Black Hawk would be docking the Station. They are just now heading towards docking station 6.”
The voice belonged to a young ensign wearing a gold uniform. The same one he had indeed expressed his wishes to. Arjin had not thought the man would have come down in person to tell him. But rather used the commbadge.
“Thank you Ensign.”, was all he said. Giving the man a small nod and a smile for his effort.
He held the padd in his hand and took the remainder of the salad to the replicator to be reprocessed. The Arjin slowly made his way to where the Black Hawk had docked. Preferring to walk rather than beam aboard.
When he arrived at the dock’s entrance, he presented his transfer orders to the Security Lieutenant guarding the entrance of the ship. She carefully read all there was to read. Making sure to compare the face on the padd with the one on hers and the one in real life. With a nod she gave back the Padd and stepped aside.
“Welcome aboard Lieutenant Commander Djinx.”
He took the padd back and nodded. Then stepped inside finding his way with ease towards the main turbolift.
“Computer. Locate Captain Geisler for me please.”
The metallic female voice chirped first before responding: “The captain is in his ready room”.
Arjin stepped inside the turbolift and gave the order to move to deck one. Stepping onto the bridge, he did not give it much attention yet. Instead he walked straight over to the captain’s ready room. Straightened his uniform so that it was immaculate and chimed.
Harvey sat behind his desk, reviewing their mission orders a final time. It would be only a few minutes before it was time to depart. He knew there would be ample time to review the information in the few days' journey to the Hadyn Nebula, but it was a tradition of his, reviewing the data before shipping out.
At the sound of the door chime, Harvey's eyes glanced up to the closed door. It had been frequently used today between staff updates and sudden transfers. Therefore, he had no idea what to expect when he cleared his throat and commanded the doors to open.
As the doors slid open, Arjin saw his future captain sitting behind his desk. He stepped inside and stood to attention.
"Lieutenant Commander Arjin Djinx reporting for duty captain."
Harvey's glance had lingered on the door as it opened, revealing a Trill male in science teal. He couldn't stop his left eyebrow from arching the moment he saw the three pips on the man's collar. The Captain first thought of Adam Casey, his lifelong friend whom he'd pulled back into service when the ship was at Yolvanda II. Even though the very action saved his life and the lives of his children, Adam was reluctant to head into the unknown with no one to care for his girls.
Adam's departure had left Harvey without a Science Chief just before a major mission. Harvey had requested a replacement, but honestly wasn't counting on a fast transfer, much less even a Lieutenant Commander. It only proved to him how much desire Starfleet had in this mission's success. "Captain Harvey Geisler," he introduced himself. "Have a seat, Mister Djinx."
Arjin sat down after he was invited to. Not sure what to make of the raising of the eyebrow of his new commanding officer. Maybe the man had issues with him being Trill. In any case, the gesture, meant or not had left him a bit on edge.
He handed the padd over to Captain Geisler so he could read his transfer orders. Keeping his demeanure as neutral as possible.
"Thank you Captain.", was all he said.
Harvey was rarely one for words, and his reputation was kept as he accepted the PADD in silence and began to review it. "The Scorpio?" Harvey asked, instantly spotting the name of his last assignment. "I didn't realize I'd be pulling you away from Captain Mar."
The words of the Captain were not what Arjin had expected to hear. But he did not show it when he responded.
"Yes Captain. I was serving onboard the Scorpio under Captain Mar when my new orders came along. Does this make it a problem?"
"Of course not, Mr. Djinx," Harvey said, thumbing the PADD off and placing it in front of him. "If anything, it brings me a bit of ease concerning our orders. Starfleet would not have given me one of the most capable science officers in the fleet otherwise."
"I see Captain. And I thank you for your words. I will do my best to live up to them.", Arjin Responded. "And may I ask about these orders, Sir? Or are they restricted?"
Harvey shook his head. "We're heading for the Hadyn Nebula. The Consortium sent two of their ships, the Cochrane and the Chimera, to see if they can find a Thalaron weapon. It's all based on a rumor, but knowing how badly the Consortium outnumber us, we can't afford for them to get their hands on a weapon of that magnitude. The Nebula is Mutura-class. So, we'll have no sensors or shields."
As he listened to the Captain's answer, his eyes narrowed when he heard him mention the Romulan Thalaron weapon. Such weapons made him sick to the bone. It was an invention that mirrored the darker side of the Romulan Star Empire.
"We certainly do not want that to happen. No way.", was Arjin's reply. "As for the Mutara-class nebula. Well that should be interresting. But not unmanagable."
"Indeed," confirmed Harvey. "So, that's where we are currently at. How about you, Commander? Is there anything you need to discuss while you're here?"
"Not specifically, Sir. Unless you have special orders for my department right now."
Shaking his head, Harvey rose from his chair. "Then I'll leave you to it, Commander." He came around the desk and extended his right hand to the Trill. "Welcome aboard."
As the Captain stepped out of his chair, Arjin did the same. He accepted the outstreached hand and shook it.
"Thank you, Sir.", he replied. "Glad to be here."
Arjin left the ready room and started heading towards his departemental office.
