312 words; about a 2 minute read

Parker sat in his office, staring at the computer screen. He was looking over the duty schedules for the next week, and checking past schedules, to see who worked where.

He leaned back in his chair. "Computer. Start a personal log."
The computer beeped.
"Personal log, Lieutenant Parker Voss. I've been staring at old duty rosters, trying to get a handle on how the people in my department perform. I've met just about everyone in the section, and 3 people stand out to me. Ensign Aloza Nasek, Bajorian. She follows orders well, and usually completes her assignments quickly and in a professional manner. Keeps this up, and she might be inline for a promotion. Lieutenant Junior Grade Kemm, Kelplen. Honestly, I've never worked or served with a Kelplen before. Heard stories about them...some people say that fall apart under pressure...some say the opposite, I'm going to keep my mind open about his performance. His records show a good work ethic. Finally Chief Petty Officer Tarsa Rugers, human. Again, records indicate a good worker."

He picked up his cup and sipped his tea.
"Meet the security chief recently, Lieutenant Commander Camila Di Pasquale. No nonsense officer, grilled me for about 2 hours about my past postings. Wanted to know the story of my decorations....told her. She asked several questions..one stands out...about Romulan Ale, if I ever drank any...I said 'yes'. By the tone of the grilling, I figured she was going to see me booted off the ship, but she surprised me by not saying anything. Then she actually recruited me for her search and rescue team, said that the team needed someone good with his hands. Means I'll have to cross train, starting with mountain climbing.....and I have the holodeck reserved for a climbing lesson so I have to cut this short. Computer, close and save log."
